“L’ecologia studia le relazioni tra gli organismi e l’ambiente in cui si sviluppano. Essa esige anche di fermarsi a pensare e a discutere sulle condizioni di vita e di sopravvivenza di una società, con l’onestà di mettere in dubbio modelli di sviluppo, produzione e consumo” (LS, 138) Attraverso un’analisi attenta e ampia delle  rammatiche condizioni ambientali e sociali del pianeta, ma con il linguaggio semplice e universale della verità che raggiunge il cuore di tutti, papa Francesco ci dice che il rispetto e la salvaguardia  del creato, della casa comune, non può più essere considerato solo come una questione di buone pratiche, di scelte “verdi”, affidate alla sensibilità del singolo, di un gruppo o di un movimento. Non basta più parlare di ecologia come difesa della natura e ricerca di nuove tecnologie rispettose dell’ambiente, come insieme di “risposte urgenti e parziali ai problemi di degrado ambientale, esaurimento delle risorse o inquinamento”. Si impone con urgenza un approccio diverso, uno sguardo puntato verso un orizzonte più ampio, e la strada che Francesco ci indica è quella di un’ECOLOGIA INTEGRALE, “che comprenda chiaramente le dimensioni umane e sociali” (LS, 137)  Una vera rivoluzione, un cambiamento radicale, che parte, appunto, dalla ‘radice’ più profonda del tema ecologico: l’uomo, l’idea che ha di se stesso e la relazione che vive con se stesso, con gli altri, con la natura. “Non ci sarà una nuova relazione con la natura – scrive papa Francesco – senza un essere umano nuovo. Non c’è ecologia senza un’adeguata antropologia”. (LS, 118). 

Dunque, ecologia integrale significa sguardo nuovo, cambio di rotta su ambiente, economia, società, cultura, vita quotidiana per passare dalla logica dell’antropocentrismo egoistico e dal modello tecnocratico alla “cultura della cura”; dalla logica del dominio sul creato a quella responsabilità della casa comune per il bene di tutti. E’ una responsabilità, quella della cura della casa comune che riguarda tutti, nessuno escluso. Tutti sono chiamati a dare il proprio contributo, partendo dai gesti più apparentemente banali della quotidianità all’impegno sociale e politico a diversi livelli. Una grande sfida culturale, spirituale ed educativa”, che il papa ci incoraggia ad affrontare, nella fiducia che degli sforzi di tutti nella direzione del cambiamento e del bene comune nulla andrà perduto. (LS, 212).
